Genotype

Your genotype refers to the specific combination of gene variants that you inherit from your biological parents. Humans have two copies of each chromosome, one from the egg and one from the sperm, which means we have two copies of each gene. These copies can be the same or slightly different.

For example, the gene for eye color has different variants, such as one for brown eyes and one for blue eyes. If you inherit two brown-eye variants, your genotype is brown/brown; if you inherit one brown and one blue, your genotype is brown/blue; and if you inherit two blue variants, your genotype is blue/blue.

Your genotype tells us which versions of a gene you carry, which can influence traits like eye color or how your body responds to medications.
