A segmental abnormality means only part of a chromosome is missing or duplicated, rather than the entire chromosome. It can affect every cell in the embryo (segmental aneuploid) or only some cells (segmental mosaic). Segmental abnormalities generally have better outcomes than whole chromosome abnormalities.
