Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)

HLA (also known as MHC when not talking about humans) are a group of genes that code for special proteins that can be presented on our cells. These HLAย proteinsย can combine with other proteins that our body makes to calibrate our immune system to recognize itself and not attack our own cells. HLA determines donor compatibility during organ transplants.

HLA may be involved in triggering miscarriage or implantation failure, although this is controversial.
