Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a condition characterized by the loss of normal ovarian function before the age of 40. It involves the depletion or dysfunction of ovarian follicles, leading to a decrease in the production of estrogen and other hormones, and often results in irregular or absent menstrual periods. Women with POI may experience symptoms similar to menopause and infertility. The condition may arise from genetic factors, autoimmune disorders and environmental factors.
