Uterine anomalies

Uterine anomalies are irregularities in the structure of the uterus that are identifiable by imaging techniques or hysteroscopy. They can be congenital or acquired.

Congenital uterine anomalies are structural abnormalities of the uterus that are present from birth, resulting from atypical formation, fusion, or resorption of the Mรผllerian ducts during fetal development. Examples include septate, bicornuate, and unicornuate uteruses.

Acquired uterine anomalies develop after birth and can be influenced by various factors such as surgical interventions, infections, or pathological conditions. Examples include adenomyosis, where endometrial tissue grows into the uterine muscle; uterine fibroids, which are benign tumors of the uterine wall; and endometrial polyps, which are overgrowths of the lining of the uterus.
